I went to the ABC sto tonight and decided I would by something different. So I invested in Johnny Walker Black Label, Chivas Regal, Knob Creek, and Courvoisier. I'm not sure exactly the best way to drink them. I do know I want to stay away from mixed drinks in this foray, so I have just had Johnny on the rocks and Chivas with a bit of water. I liked them both, although Johnny kicked me a bit with the first sip. Haven't determined the best setting to enjoy both in, but I can definitely say that these two whiskies are not something I have the tolerance to drink alot of and remember what happened the next day. SO for now. its time to try the Courvoisier.

Your Dominant Intelligence is Logical-Mathematical Intelligence

You are great at finding patterns and relationships between things.
Always curious about how things work, you love to set up experiments.
You need for the world to make sense - and are good at making sense of it.
You have a head for numbers and math ... and you can solve almost any logic puzzle.

You would make a great scientist, engineer, computer programmer, researcher, accountant, or mathematician.

What Kind of Intelligence Do You Have?

Taking a hand and holding on.

I am slowly realizing that I can't always stand on my own two feet. I was raised that as a man you picked yourself up and moved on. Overall this isn't a bad ideology. But what happens when all the sucking it up and moving on comes crashing back? You get to a point in your life when you have moved yourself right out of contact with people that care enough to actually help you deal with your issues. I end up with pent up anger and feelings of lost opportunities that I carry around and will not leave me alone til I face them. Finally I am starting to face over 30 yrs of moving on and hiding how I feel deep inside. Are we a great people? What do we have culturally that is so great?" If a slice of the population that I observed massing back and forth between what is trendy and not trendy is any indication of where we are headed and what we offer the world, then it ain't looking good. I saw many faces that looked oblivious to what was outside of their small world of themselves. Granted I am also guilty of thinking the world revolves around me from time to time, but I am capable of stopping and noticing that it doesn't, occasionally. I don't fear for my country so much, because I am an ardent believer that we still have the power to rise up to any challenge. I'm from the South, so that's pretty much ingrained into my being.

Living in the nation's capital tends to make it hard to miss daily world events. Its one thing or another here. But get outside of the area by say 35-50 miles and you might as well be in Kansas. It seems to me that people do not realize how what happens in this city really affects them. Maybe its because they are so far down the chain or they just don't care. Or maybe I'm the one who is missing something. Ok, rambled enough for the evening.

The War Tapes

So instead of sitting back with some work friends and enjoying happy hour, I decided to make the trek across town to see the 5:10 screening of The War Tapes. The movie itself is very well done. Even though I have not been in combat, I can say I honestly emphasized with the soldiers of Charlie Company. I understood a lot of what they were going through. I understand what its like to go through something and just say it will be ok and that will be that, it will go away. And it doesn’t. I was also humbled by how their wives/girlfriends stood by them regardless of how the war had changed them. "For better of for worse." That pretty much summed up the movie for me.

I honestly didn't want to see it at first. I was afraid that it would be another war-for-oil b.s. movie like Fahrenheit 9/ whatever. I was also standoffish about seeing it because, I feel guilty that I am not over there riding in a Humvee locked and loaded waiting for contact. I can't go back to being a Marine that I once was, because I left the military with more metal in my body than I came in with. Metal that was put in place to stabilize a shoulder damaged in routine physical training. Sometimes it really gets to me emotionally because I can't be there.

I do not see any glory in war. The War Tapes brings that point home very bluntly. When the adrenaline wears off and time advances, those that didn't come home are what's remembered most. If you don't believe me, think about the last holiday that we had that celebrated war. We don't generally celebrate conflict, not directly. We instead remember and celebrate those who served and those who gave all they had. It’s about the people, not the conflict.

Anyway, go see the movie. I am not going to write a review. I liked it. Simple as that. Go see it. War is not pretty. I have been walking the path near my house and decided today to let the dog play in the water. Well there is a large crossing through the creek near my house and I walked down there to let him cool off. Slightly up the creek I could see a sandbar type area that looked like a better place to take the dog, so I headed for it. So here I am walking with the dog through this trail and I see a bike sitting off to the side. No real thought about it. I'm in the middle of the burbs. Its summer. Some kid probably left it and is playing with his buds. I continue walking down the trail and I can see the sandbar in the creek. It was a nice spot to play too. But as I turn a corner to come onto the creek bank I look up and my dog is about 5 feet from a teenage couple in the middle of a serious makeout session. Wasn't expecting to see that. Maybe a few squirrels playing with there nuts or even a deer, but not that. I never broke stride, about faced, said "sorry kids," as I walked off. Trying to excuse myself as quickly as possible. Fortunately they had their backs to me, well she did, and I couldn't see his face. So that's probably for the best. Anyway, I'll be staying on the trail until mating season is over.

Vlad comes home

Guess its just about time.

Cloaking devices and the Predator

I was reading a story today about how scientists were developing the math necessary to create the cloaking device. Several people had parked on the side of the road and were out of their cars staring down into traffic. I thought there had been some horrible traffic accident that had so traumatized everyone that even the firefighters felt like it was hopeless. It wasn't until I pulled onto that same road that I realized why everyone was on the overpass. They weren't staring at some horrible accident....They were paying their respects. The funeral procession for Vicky Armel was passing on the opposite side of the road, heading past the Police Station where she was slain.

I was awed by the number of police cruisers and firetrucks. I pulled to the side of the road. Straight ahead of me on the overpass was a fire truck with its ladder extended, an American flag hanging from it. Across the interstate I saw a woman standing with her hand over her heart. I knew I had to call my Dad and tell him what I was seeing. I knew he would understand. I had to stop several times while I was talking to him because I was choking up from the emotion of it all. Complete strangers were thanking this officer for making the ultimate sacrifice. She was touching us all.

My Dad listened quietly while I described the scene to him. I knew he would understand. He had been part of that procession many times for fellow officers. I never met Detective Armel, as I am sure most of those standing beside the road had not. But seeing her procession reminded me of how I used to think of my father when I was younger. My father was a police officer. A damn fine officer. He was Superman to me. He was/is still the man I measure myself by.

Sitting on the side of the road talking to my Dad I felt a little less lost. For a few minutes my Dad was Superman again.

The smell of the SuperMax.

Prison Bitch... I've seen enough Oz episodes to hope that his stay is much the same...

Moussaoui...

"Who's the martyr now bitch!!!"

Once more...

Just some more food for thought on the immigration thing...

I would have to say, "I agree."

More irritating than the price of gas. I am generally not the love it or leave it type person. I also know that illegals live a life where they can be working one day and deported the next. They become just another set of hands picking vegetables or working construction. I respect the work they do. They are good people for the most part. But they are still breaking the law.

We won't bend on this issue. American's are one of the most charitable groups in the world, but we don't take kindly to demanding of us. We are a nation made up of immigrants. We fought, cheated, and stole this land. That's the evolutionary chain of civilization. Slaves built the south and a large part of the North. The Chinese built the railroads. The Italians and the Irish, well there was Little Italy and Boston, and the Mob. The point is, that as an immigrant through history in this country, no one had anything handed too them. The first immigrants to the New World were killed by the natives. Life was not easy. It still isn't. Oh, and just to rain a bit more on your parade. If the U.S. Government hasn't apologized for slavery, it will not rollover and just give you what you want. Trust me, we know.

Quotes...

Just some things that I heard this past week that I thought I would share....

Dude, you must have some seriously thick testicles...

If you gave me a breast exam like you rub your dog's butt, we'd have a better relationship...

It's like swinging a Mercedes around in a bar fight....

Food for thought...

Ok, while I do sympathize with someone wanting to come to my country for the chance of a better life, I am starting to get angry over the immigration/entitlement debate going on at the moment. I have worked with many illegal workers, most of them hispanic, doing the same kind of low paying, back breaking work that they do. They usually live in cramped quarters, never learn english, and live daily with the possibility of being snatched from their jobs and sent packing south of the border (where they can start the trip all over). And you know what, I am ok with that. They broke our laws to get here, and that's the risk they run. They are here illegally. You can argue that sending illegals home breaks up families. It may well be. But see when a prisoner escapes and goes home, law enforcement officials usually return him to his 10x6 cell. That affects the family as well. However, if he hadn't of been breaking the law....you know the rest.

That being said, I do not blame someone for wanting to make a better life for themselves; I would do the same thing if I was in their shoes. I do however get pissed by pro-illegal immigration groups and their sense of entitlement. Their message is that the U.S. can't function without them. My first thought is, these groups are somewhat ill-informed on how the U.S. came to be. First off, we are all fucking immigrants. Most of us are hardworking. The only non-hardworking ones I see are: a) enjoying the government welfare system for generations. b) performing some glamorous but low impact reality show-type work. c) spending the day protesting about 'entitlement'. If you don't think we can function without you, take an economics lesson. I'd study supply and demand first and then capitalism. See we can hire someone else. That's the way it works here. There will always be someone who wants to work and is damn happy to do it, minus the aforementioned a), b), and c). So watch out, because they might take those jobs from you that you say we (the citizens) are too good to do.

If you win the 'lottery', as an African friend of mine calls it, and get to come to the U.S. working towards a green card and eventual permanent status, I say welcome. You are on the road to a life that should be better than where you come from. Oh and don't mind CNN or FOX news, it really isn't as dangerous here as it looks. But to those of you who come here illegally and want to bitch about what you should be entitled to because you're here, realize that you are really starting to piss us off. Who are we? The ones who can vote, pay taxes, and wield actual political leverage in this country.

Signed -- The real people that keep the U.S. running

Semper Fi.

I discovered this site last night and thought I would share. Department of the Navy and Marine Corps. More beer and good ole rum and coke. I really like Michael Caine. The characters he plays always make me want to ask their advice on things. Seems like they always know what to say. Well this movie was titled Last Orders. Its a drinking movie. It follows a group of friend fulfilling their friend's last wishes. Watching the movie I couldn't help but feel like all of the characters to some extent. In moments when no one is watching I am free to express the pain that I carry. The longing for someone who understands it, and the understanding from myself that it will make me stronger and not kill me.

This movie made me realize that I try to contain myself instead of living my life. Hopefully this will be a thought I retain tomorrow after I wake up with the hangover. I am somewhat of a free spirit in my thinking. I box myself in an resist all attempts to get me outside of my little cube.

The point of the movie, since I digressed, was that 4 people close to Michael Caine's character relived how he touched their lives. Seemed insignificant at the time. But it wasn't in the end. Its hard saying goodbye to someone we hold dear, but it shows you how much worse it might have been to have never said hello.

I am not a blogger.

It might just be the alcohol that I absorbed to deal with a wound that won't heal, but I am feeling a bit liberated. I haven't posted in a while, and I have a good excuse. My life has changed and time is a precious commodity. So I don't add to this. I am not a blogger. I have never considered myself such nor do I aspire to be such. Please do not think that I mean any disrespect to those who do call themselves bloggers or that I in anyway think what they do is a waste of their time. I do not. This blog is pretty much at my whim. I consider it more of a personal journal than anything else. I can pretty much say whatever I want or feel. If someone agrees or disagree, so be it. I know, kinda sounds like a blogger attitude, but that's where it stops. I see bloggers as trying to change the world from their little perch by make some kind of social statement. I don't try to do that. I'm kinda leaning towards the Mind of Mencia kind of statement. Its the 'who's a huge dumbass today thing'. That's my perspective. Its funny to me, and at the same time I can express some outrage as well.

Ever since becoming one of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children I've stopped joining shit. I just don't want to be included in anyone's group or cliche or whatever. I like being an independent. Its more fun. You get the juicy gossip, but don't have to give a shit if its about you. There are only a handful of people in this world of whom, I care about their opinion of me, and they know who they are. Only one of whom I know reads this. This site, is an extension of my mind. Very few take the time to understand it.

Now if you are a real blogger. My hat is off to you. You have dedication that I do not have. I just hope those of you who consider yourselves bloggers have something worth reading.

The paper.

I'm trying to work on my final paper for my Master's degree. That to me says there is no effect and no reason to do a paper on it. We are afraid to actually look at something on face value without putting a political spin on it. The current bullshit over the ports deal is a prime example. Because it's Bush (the same thing would probably happen if a Dem was in the Whitehouse) taking a stand on this and not accusing Dubai of 'driving while Arab' he's shown some integrity. He's also taken a shitload of flak for it.

Granted there is that little thing about the 9/11 hijackers all being of Middle Eastern dissent, but all the Klan members I have ever seen over the years that I lived in Alabama were white. Does that mean that all white men in Alabama are Klansman? Should we blockade the South again as we did during the Civil War until all white men can fill out some form and take an oath to not to lynch anyone or dance the electric slide at weddings ever again?

I hate the R-word, it is usually thrown around to distract peoples' attention from flimsy arguments, i.e. O.J. Simpson. He did it, get over it. It isn't 'racist' to say he did. It’s called detective work. However, I see the uproar over the ports deal coming down to three things: skin tone, latitude, and longitude. I completely agree with this view on the situation.

Smoky Mountain Shark Hunting...

Global warming may or may not be actually occurring, but it doesn' t mean that sharks will be swimming in Tennessee again anytime soon. I discovered him when I lived way down south. A good friend of mine lent me one of his CDs. Listening to it every night when I went to sleep, his haunting voice filled my dreams. I devoured his music. If it had been a drug, I would have surely OD'd many times over.

His music has many messages. He sings about people, their lives, their struggles. Albeit his politics are not what I would choose. I can understand where he is coming from and I do agree with some of his ideas. Living in his environment and experiencing his culture I can understand. I would equate him with the folk/protest music of the 60s here in the States.

He died the year I was born. A victim of an oppressive regime coming to power. Before he died, his hands were broken by his killers and then he was forced to play one last song before he was shot.

Here are a couple of his songs. I don't know how many movies I have watched that involve some elaborate plan to steal millions, billions, or a bazillion dollars (pinky pointed at a 30 deg angle towards my nose). Movies make most of us look, well, less than intelligent when it comes to planning a major theft. There was the Great Train Robbery with David Nivens and most recently Entrapment with Catherine Zeta Jones-Douglas's buttocks, and Oceans 11 and 12 with G.C. and the boys. These heists were well planned and went off with the suspense and drama that we are accustomed to in movies. However, we rarely hear about them happening in real life. (Damn authorities with their rules....)

We get alot of bank robberies in the U.S. but we get very few heists. The main differences between the two are the value of the stolen goods, the level of skill involved, and the amount of forethought put into the theft.

Any moran dressed as a clown or talking into a cellphone can walk into a bank with the obligatory "I'll be the guy robbing you now" sign and walk away with something whether it be cash or new stainless steel bracelets. The downside to this is that people pretty much know that you're there, and what you are up to. Also there's a good possibility of people getting hurt. Never a good thing.

Heists involve so much more. But what they require most is some sportsmanship, a damn good intellect, and a detailed plan. And by plan, I mean something more than, "I'm going down to the Farmer's and Mechanic's Bank of Lagrange with little Nathan Jr and rob me some Hayseeds!"

Planning is essential. It seems that there are so many stepping forward wishing to be recognized. So let's get right into the very first, but not the last to be named as such.

Mr. Fred Phelps, some call him reverend, but I've never been to a church so backwards and so hateful, and I was raised Baptist (currently in recovery, but that is for another time). Mr Phelps and his cult are so desipicable that I won't even waste my webspace to list their site. Lately he has been seen protesting at the funerals of our servicemen and women. It really makes you go "WTF?!??" when someone says that IEDs are God's way of punishing the USA for harboring homosexuality. Why does anyone still care who is gay and who isn't?

I'm a pretty big proponent of free speech, even when it's inflammatory. I was raised in the south where observing a Klan protest march was commonplace, and while I have no place for the Klan's rhetoric, I would much rather sit through one of their rallies than even listen to Mr. Phelps clear his throat.

Thankfully these guys are stepping up to put a boot in Mr. Phelps protesting hindquarters, if only figuratively. Thank you, Patriot Guard Riders. Makes me wish I had a bike too.

1.75 weeks...

So I gave my 2 weeks notice today. Elephant & Castle Pub, D.C.

So I went with some friends to the Elephant & Castle Pub near the Ronald Reagan Building and the Federal Triangle Metro Stop. First impression, it felt a bit nicer and upscale than I am used to. I do prefer darkened holes in the wall where I can discretely enjoy a Miller High Life when I am of the mind. Although my tastes do run the gamut from the 'Champagne of Beers' to my favorite breakfast drink, Guinness. E&C had a good beer selection. My favorite was Young's Chocolate Stout. Apparently an acquired taste, but I liked it.

I have actually been to this pub twice so far, but I don't see it as a normal, 'lets do happy hour kind of place.' If I worked near it, that would probably change. I can however recommend the hot wings. Make sure you get them extra hot, which in this case is 'white people' hot. Spicy and tangy, but not much to make you sweat. But even still with the lack of heat, these wings tasted great.

The E&C does have the distinction of being 2 blocks from G.W.'s house. So its a good place to hit after walking the mall or seeing some museums.

My only issue with the type of bar is that there are so many like it already. That Irish/British/Scottish Public House thing has been done so much around here that they tend to run together.

Overall, I would say its a decent bar. My experiences with the wait staff and bartenders have been very good. It's so hard to get good customer service in this area. I am still trying to see if that is a cultural issue or simply that people pay less attention to the details here. We will see.

So Bang On!!! And try the fish and chips w/cod.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://formallythebloglesswonder.blogspot.com/2006/02/bang-on-elephant-castle-pub-dc.html' title='Bang On!!! I know what you are saying, "Who gives a shit about some dead guy in Kazakhstan?", and you're right. Most people don't give a shit, but I was bored and haven't read enough about the 'stans lately. Back to the article. They were all dead in this guys car. Lead poisoning... Apparently Brita filters are in short supply. Anywho. The article goes on to mention another opposition leader who apparently committed suicide last November by shooting himself in the chest twice and then finishing himself off with a shot to the head. That's some tough shooting. Whatever happened to sight alignment, sight picture. I can understanding double tapping an intruder in the chest to drop him. But double tapping yourself? Talk about sticking with your training. Oh and Mr. Doubletap died just a few days before he was to run against the incumbent in Kazakhstan's presidential election. The incumbent, who also won the election, was nice enough to send a card of condolence for Mr. Dtap's family.
